Rivals' results boost United's top-four bid

Dutch midfielder Daley Blind believes Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur was the team’s best 90-minute performance of the season.

The Reds cruised to victory over Spurs at Old Trafford on Sunday, with Marouane Fellaini, Michael Carrick and Wayne Rooney all scoring in the first half to consolidate fourth place in the Barclays Premier League table.

United have dominated periods of several games this season, but Blind feels this was the team’s strongest complete display.

"If you look at 90 minutes, it is [our best game of the season]," Blind told MUTV. "In the last few weeks and months, we have been improving and I think we’ve played good halves before, but today we were really aggressive for almost 90 minutes. And that’s a step [forward] for this team.

"Everybody was working so hard together and fighting for each other, winning every ball that we could. And we played like a team. It was really enjoyable to play. I think maybe there should be a 'Team of the Match' [instead of Man of the Match]."

United attacked Tottenham from the off, seemingly intent on banishing memories of Monday’s FA Cup defeat to Arsenal as quickly as possible, and Spurs were all but defeated by the interval.

"If you lose a game, you always want to play the next game straight away," Blind said. "If it’s a cup game, it’s very disappointing, but if you lose in the Premier League, you want to win the next game."

United are now one point behind third-placed Arsenal and only two points behind Manchester City, who lost to Burnley on Saturday. But Sunday’s win was just the start of a tough run of games for the Reds that includes clashes with Liverpool next week, followed by City and Chelsea next month.

"You’re always looking up but the important thing is to watch yourselves, play your own games and try to get three points every game," Blind added. "They’re all finals now and we have to realise that.

"It was very important to get the three points – we have some difficult games coming up and we need all the points we can get. I think this was the start of something nice."
