Young: Reds won';t lack in confidence

Ashley Young wants Manchester United to show character and confidence going into Sunday's crucial clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal's 10-man Reds were knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal on Monday but Young insists the team's spirit will not be dented with some key fixtures in the battle for a top-four spot on the horizon.

Young, who scored twice in a 3-1 success at Spurs in 2012, has also been on target recently after hitting a late winner in United's last Barclays Premier League outing at Newcastle. And the winger will be determined to help register a third successive United league win when Mauricio Pochettino's men come to Manchester.

"It was disappointing to go out of the FA Cup as we had a good chance to go through and go on and win it," he told MUTV. "[We have to] show character now and, with the team spirit we've got, everyone is back on the training pitch and we'll be going into Sunday's game full of confidence, as we always are, and looking to get three points again at Old Trafford."

Former Red Danny Welbeck scored the goal that ended United's Cup run, but he remains friends with Young and the two had lunch this week, with Ashley keen to consign the bad memories of the defeat to the past.

"It's back to business and hopefully we'll be back on Sunday with our confidence sky-high again and looking to win," Young added. "This is where we'll see the character of the squad as we've got a fantastic team spirit at the club."
