Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says Ashley Young fits the perfect mould of the player he likes to work with.
The Reds' versatile no.18, who has returned to his traditional position as a winger in recent games, netted the vital late winner in Wednesday’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park. His performances alone merit praise but van Gaal has also been impressed by Young’s attitude throughout his first season in charge.
“He is a player who wants to perform what you say. I think he fits good in my profile,” van Gaal told MUTV. “We have played also with wing-backs and I think that is his best position. Now I use him as a winger and he does a very good job. I am pleased with him.”
The 89th-minute opportunity converted by Young was one of a number of a good chances the Reds created against Newcastle, with van Gaal insisting his side are making positive strides forward.
“We are progressing still, which is why I was pleased with the performance [on Wednesday] as it was a better way of playing,” he added. “I was not pleased that we didn't score from [some of] the chances but okay, it's going well. We didn't lose unnecessary balls, or not as many as before. I was pleased with our composure on the ball."
