Rodgers respects world class' van Gaal

Brendan Rodgers says the winner of Liverpool's clash with United at Anfield on Sunday will gain major momentum in the fight for Champions League places.

"Psychologically it can be a big boost," says Rodgers. "It's important you see the rivalry is historic. United have been up there, they've got good players and a world class manager. They'll look to continue to stay in that top four. Our challenge is to get above them.

"There's no question of van Gaal's talent. Coming into Premier League is different to where he managed before. But it doesn't matter what I think – I am sure he's not bothered.

"We have good momentum and have shown our qualities over the past three months. The players deserve huge amount of credit, and at home we're always confident. We've put ourselves in a good position with nine games to go. The consistency and confidence of the team is really high. We look forward to the game. The supporters will be right with us."

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet believes the side must not let the sense of occasion get to them. "There will be a huge build up, but as professionals we can't get carried away," says the Belgian stopper. "We have to focus on our jobs.

"We know it's a big game, and playing at home, we want to get three points. That is the only thing we will think about. We will prepare the best, as Manchester United will do, and we will be ready at kick off."

Jordan Henderson is also relishing the tie. "We can't wait," said the Liverpool vice-captain. "We're high on confidence and we've got great momentum. It will be a tough one, but at Anfield we'll go into the game full of confidence and we hope we'll get the result we need."
