The Barclays Premier League produced a set of moderately pleasing results for Louis van Gaal this weekend following the win over Sunderland, as United closed the gap on Manchester City while pulling away from Southampton.

Liverpool dealt a blow to Manuel Pellegrini’s title ambitions on Sunday, winning 2-1 at Anfield. Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho scored for Brendan Rodgers’ side, with Edin Dzeko getting City’s strike. United, in fourth place, are just five points behind the club's hometown rivals as a consequence, while the Merseyside outfit move up to fifth, two points adrift of van Gaal's men.

Having been leapfrogged by United on Saturday, Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Everton on Sunday afternoon meant they hopped back into third spot, one point ahead of the Reds. Olivier Giroud and Tomas Rosicky got the goals for the Gunners at the Emirates.

Saturday’s other results went well for United, meanwhile, as two other teams vying for Champions League places
